Our description

Nea Iraklitsa is a small town that belongs to the municipality of Pangea and Kavala prefecture and is located in the western part of the bay, just 13km before Kavala. From Thessaloniki is approximately 155km.

The place was created by populating refugees from Asia Minor from town Iraklitsa after World War I and for many years it was just a small settlement with dilapidated houses and poor people. But as tourism grew, Nea Iraklitsa was developing and transforming, primarily because of the beautiful beach in the village and a little around. Nea Iraklitsa is a very nice tourist spot that has even a small marina, villas for rent, hotels, taverns, beach bars and shops are numerous.

The place has just over 1000 residents.

Nea Iraklitsa has a long sandy beach of about 2000m. Villas and hotels are arranged along the beach, and you can choose whether you want to be in the center where the residential area and the marina are, or on the left side of the beach closer to the Kavala. We were very pleasantly surprised by this town. Small and picturesque, with the beautiful shoreline, it is dotted with traditional restaurants - taverns and trendy bars, bakeries, candy shops and stores. Besides the beach, there are children's toys, slides, swings, and the beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and volleyball on the sand.

The left part of the beach, looking towards the sea, has organized large parking, yacht club and sports facilities, and there is also a large supermarket Lidl.

From a small peninsula located next to the marina, you can catch a nice view of the entire bay on one side and the beach Remvi on the other side. There is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Marina which was built by an association of fishermen from Nea Iraklitsa.

Nea Iraklitsa is famous in the Orthodox world for the miraculous icon of the Holy Virgin of Revelation (Faneromeni) painted by the Apostle Luke, and found in Iraklitsa in Turkey and moved to Nea Iraklitsa with refugees in 1922 and then transferred to the Mt. Athos. People of Nea Iraklitsa lobbied successfully its return in 1932. The icon is miraculous and healing. In the same church are kept relics (the skull) of St. Haralampije.

As we already mentioned the beach in Nea Iraklitsa is very long, about 2km and is organized in the big part. Sandy, wide and with a gradual depth. Since 2007 it has a Blue flag. The water is crystal clear and the beach is one of the best in the prefecture of Kavala. Behind the marine and the peninsula, there is another, hidden, smaller beach Remvi, where the water is clear even in the high season when most beaches due to high temperature and crowd get dirty. You can explore the surroundings of beach Remvi by yourself and find some wild, small bays where you can be alone. Of these beautiful bays, Psatha beach stands out, which used to be wild, but now there is a beach bar with umbrellas and sunbeds.

At only 5km from Nea Iraklitsa is one of the best, if not the most beautiful beach in northern Greece, Ammolofi, and within a range of 10km left and right of Nea Iraklitsa, there are many other beautiful beaches such as the Palio, Batis, Kalamitsi, Kargiani.

Nea Iraklitsa is the ideal choice for those who want a small, quiet resort, no fancy amenities and nightlife. At the same time, it would suit those who want to be close to a larger city, such as Kavala where they can get after a 10-minute drive, go shopping or partying and return to the peace and relaxation. Thessaloniki is also close. An hour and a half drive.

Near is the mountain Pangea with excellent track trails, which peak can be reached by car. There are seven monasteries on it, the river Nestos and Strimoniko, Kavala with the old town and the famous archaeological site Philippi, even Thassos can be reached for a one day trip.
