“Author of the text: Jovan Simunovački”

Homer’s favorite hero, Odysseus, wandered around Thsasos with the team, and there he heard the enthusiastic song of the siren, irresistibly tempting… If we really want to squeeze out and clean the story of mythological blur - it might turn out that for the Odyssey’s pirate ears sounded even more tempting the ringing of the gold from mines of Thassos…
However, let’s say that it may have been for the music… One very well-known cult, an orphic, older than Homer’s poems as it seems, is closely related to music. Thracian Orpheus, the founder of this cult, says the story, so beautifully played and sang that with his song he could charmed everyone. The possibility that an Orphic cult originated on Thassos is not incredible, but it is not quite serious either. However, it is an entirely acceptable thesis that the emerging orphism at first began to expand just there, along the Thracian mainland and nearby islands.
By the way, even for Homer till now it is not entirely certain from which island the origin is to be drawn. In the shortest possible range are the four ‘most gritty’ islands as candidates… Others seem to have mummified in centuries of controversy, and gave up pretensions…

Adding to this long tradition of liturgical church chanting, the story is gaining in importance. Unimaginable is the Christian Orthodox rite without often singing choral and always with at least one vowel, whether the ritual has sad or cheerful character. About the influence of medieval and later spiritual music on today’s worldview is superfluous even to talk. To us, visitors of Thassos in the summer season, some music is constantly reaching the ears, the music which can rightly be said to be a mixture of everything and anything, just like a wide-ranging society which has come from different sides. The indigenous population, trying to satisfy many tourists, mostly at restaurants and cafes opt for a uniform world music standards, which are harvested in order to be audible to anyone. So the contact with Greek music is not very intense. And the Greek musical production of the modern age is less and more traditional, as it increasingly uses rhythm machines and synthesizers, computer programming and digital files.

A tribute to our time … When you add the language barrier, due for most tourists is quite impossible to understand the text - the big question is how much any beauty of the Greek melodies in general arrives to us. On the other hand - it’s not said in vain that music knows no boundaries. A man feels very much the beauty of some songs and noises are absorbed with relish despite all the barriers. On those, for tourists prepared, Greek evenings, along with delicacies and wine - some folklore will be presented. Dancing and singing with the music on traditional instruments.

If you put effort - there can be found a restaurant with live music, where until late at night you can break plates (that’s how the Greeks are partying, not breaking cups like we do, but the plates!) You need to look only at the posters who, where and when is coming, because along with these guest stars (vocals) the most popular and highly played profi combo band is usually going. In Teologos, there is a restaurant whose boss is an experienced singer, sometimes performing concerts, sometimes bringing other singers, but he also joins himself. In Rahoni there is a beautiful and very large garden - a multi-level olive grove and on the lowest floor is stage for music, but I do not know how often this summer will play. Two years ago they started to decline the active days. I was not at the evening in Makriamos, but I know that there is one place with live Greek music, and in Limenas, where I was I know that there are a couple of places with live music, but not everywhere with Greek music.
One pizzeria, for example, had a jazz band. The curiosity is that you already meet on the ferry some of the musicians that play, but that band really does not belong to top-level… mildly speaking…
