Limenas or Thassos Town (how it’s often called as of late) is the capital town on the island with a total of 4000 inhabitants.

The town is very nice, with its new and the old harbor, a large promenade by the sea, a few paved streets within the promenade with many shops, fast-food restaurants, taverns, jewelry shops, bakers.

The port is on the west side of the city, so Limenas offers a quick and easy transition to the mainland by ferries that drive between the Keramoti and Limenas every half hour.

Near the port, there is Vournelis beach (beach St. Vasilios), several fast-food restaurants, supermarkets and shops, and a large number of newer hotels and villas to rent.

The new port is from the old one almost 1km away. The area around the old port carries the charm of the old, typical Greek seaside places that many reminiscent of Dalmatia. In this part of town, you can see numerous small fishing boats, cobbled streets full of souvenir shops and traditional products from Thassos (olives, honey, halva, and soaps, teas, etc.), taverns, grocery stores.

Behind the old port is the city beach, approximately 300m long. It is a sandy beach with a gradual depth and clean water. Port is located 1,5km further away and so there is no risk of contamination. On the backside of the beach are almost no facilities for rent to tourists, because there are usually located private homes of the residents.

Limenas is unlike Potos and Limenaria, punctuated by the excavation of archaeological sites and during the light summer walks you can spot remains of gates of Zeus and Hera, the ancient amphitheater and the ancient Agora, the Acropolis, and near the old harbor there is a large archaeological museum.

In Limenas there are small parks with benches and toys for children and a small amusement park. Supermarkets are well supplied, and the town has several excellent cafes and small disco clubs for nightlife, a few banks, internet cafes, a post office, a large selection of rent-a-car (bike) agencies, the possibility of renting bicycles (Limenas is very suitable for cycling).

Limenas, compared to Potos and Limenaria, is offering more facilities to tourists, is located on a larger area and a car is required for rides inside the city. The western part of Limenas is located about 1,5km away from the eastern part.

Limenas as their base is usually chosen by the tourists who want more facilities to do or see in the evening or seek for better nightlife, while during the day visiting the island or swim at beaches that are in the close distance of town. So Limenas can be great as a base.

Limenas nearest beach is Tarsanas (400m from the new port), a few kilometers away is Nisteri, Papalimani, La Scala (4km), Pachis (10km), Makryammos (2km), Saliara (Marble) beach (6km), Golden Beach (14km). In addition to the archaeological sites of Thassos you can visit the most beautiful traditional village Panagia (10km).
