Everything you need to know about holliday in Sithonia in one place

Sitonia is not to be discovered in one go - it takes years to truly get to know it. However, a well-planned vacation is enough to fall in love with it forever. We have been in the field for years to turn your doubts into a perfect plan.

If you are looking for… Choose… Why choose that place
First time in Sithonia Nikiti The best base for exploring, well-organized place, large supermarkets and facilities
Sandy beach + amenities Sarti, Neos Marmaras Long beaches, plenty of restaurants, walking and nightlife
Peaceful family vacation Toroni, Sikia, Porto Koufo Spacious beaches, less crowded, relaxed atmosphere
Base for exploring beaches Nikiti, Ormos Panagias Fastest access to the west and east coasts
Complete peace and privacy Vourvourou, Kalamitsi, Sikia No crowds, nature, accommodation near the sea

Which place to choose in Sithonia

Sithonia is diverse and the choice of base dictates the pace of your vacation.

  • If you plan to change beaches and visit as many coves as possible, the most practical choices are Nikiti, Sarti, Ormos Panagias, or Sikia. These locations offer the fastest access to the most beautiful beaches.
  • If you love sandy beaches and lively places with plenty of amenities (taverns, shops, cafes), then Sarti and Neos Marmaras are a good choice. Sarti is the most popular place in Sithonia and many tourists gladly return to it, while Neos Marmaras is picturesque and very lively, but hilly and without a classic seaside promenade.
  • Nikiti is the most common choice for families because it has warmer and calmer sea, a nice promenade, and the best supply in all of Sithonia. The town beach is a combination of sand and gravel, but you can always find a nice spot for swimming - especially near the pier and the former camp Saint George.
  • Toroni is in our opinion the best place for a peaceful family vacation. It has a fantastic, long beach with clean sea and gradual depth, and just enough amenities to not miss anything.
  • If you are looking for peace and authenticity without crowds, consider Sikia and Kalamitsi.
  • If you want privacy and accommodation right by the sea, Vourvourou is a unique choice - it doesn’t have a classic center or promenade, but it offers complete peace.

A detailed comparison of all places and tips on how to choose a base can be found in our guide to choosing a place in Sithonia.

“Must see” beaches - What you must not miss?

You often ask us: “We only have 10 days, what is absolutely unmissable?” If you want the best of Sithonia, set aside one day to visit one of these beaches (see which ones are near you).

Orange Beach (Kavourotripes): “Greek Seychelles” with white rocks and turquoise water.

  • Tip: Come by 8 in the morning or escape to the neighboring Mega Portokali if it’s too crowded.

Karidi (Vourvourou): Finest sand and shallow, warm sea.

  • Important: Due to its huge popularity, it’s best to visit in June or September.

Lagonisi: Almost white sand and water color like on exotic islands.

  • Info: Mostly under beach loungers; the free area is small and fills up quickly.

Klimataria: The most beautiful cove in the south, completely sheltered from the wind, with taverns right by the water.

  • Important: The road is steep and winding, but the translucent water is worth every turn.

Kalamitsi: For many, the “perfect measure” of Sithonia.

  • Soft sand and crystal-clear sea, without feeling crowded even in the season.

Trani Ammouda (Livrohio): Endless expanse.

  • For whom: Ideal when you don’t want crowds and want the feeling of freedom on endless sand.

How to make the best sightseeing plan?

  • If you are staying in Nikiti and the surrounding area, some of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast are nearby - Kalogria, Koviou, Spathies, and Lagomandra. On the other hand, on the east coast, you can find Lagonisi, Karidi, and Trani Ammouda.
  • In the vicinity of Sarti and Sikia, there are a large number of beaches where you can visit a large number of the most beautiful beaches in Sithonia in a short time - from Orange and Mega Portokali to Klimataria and Tiganie.

“What if it’s windy in Sarti, where to take the children?” Sarti is known for its wind and waves, but in the immediate vicinity, there is Ahlada as well as beaches like Sikia, Tourkolimonas (two bays north of Sarti), and Kalamici.

A detailed guide with a map, access, and tips for each beach can be read in our article on the most beautiful beaches of Sithonia.

If natural shade is important to you, we have specially selected all beaches that have it in a special guide on beaches with natural shade.

Vacation with young children and babies - where to go and what to expect

“What is the best place for families with children?” is your most common question. Almost all beaches in Sithonia are sandy and clean, but where you anchor is not insignificant. Where to vacation with children (best bases):

  • Nikiti and Sarti: Our top favorites for convenience. Everything is there - large stores, facilities for children, and long promenades ideal for evening walks with strollers.
  • Toroni: Perfect for a peaceful vacation. The place is flat, with a fantastic long beach and sea without sudden depth.
  • Vourvourou: Specific and precious because the houses are right by the sea - children go straight from the yard to the shallows.
  • Neos Marmaras: It has an excellent sandy beach, but choose accommodation only nearby (near the stadium) to avoid hills while pushing a stroller.

Beaches with the “golden combination” (shallow water + natural shade)

These coves are the reason why families return to Sithonia for years. Here’s where to look for the scent of pine and turquoise water:

  • West coast: Lagomandra (famous for thick shade), Kalogria, Spathies, and Koviou (where natural shade awaits you in the afternoon).
  • East coast: The legendary Karidi (pine trees right in the shallows), Klimataria, and Kalamitsi with their famous sand, and the beach Valti with a natural tree-lined area.

Detailed recommendations for families with children and the choice of places can be found in a special

Medical clinics in Sithonia

Whether it’s colds, allergies, inflammations, or cuts, it’s important to know before you travel where you can turn to doctors for help. Excursions from Sithonia - what to visit besides beaches

The offer of excursions in Sithonia is large and it’s worth setting aside at least one day for sightseeing. From Ormos Panagias, cruises are organized

  • around Mount Athos (Athos),
  • as well as trips to the islands of Ammouliani and the Blue Lagoon.
  • These are among the most popular excursions and for many the highlight of their vacation.

In Vourvourou, you can rent a boat and explore Diaporos Island and hidden coves on your own, which is one of the most beautiful experiences in Sithonia. If you are staying in Nikiti or the surrounding area, you can visit

  • the Ormilija Monastery,
  • traditional places like Old Nikiti and Agios Nikolaos, as well as
  • Parthenonas above Neos Marmaras.

A detailed overview of all excursions and how to organize them can be found in our guide to excursions in Sithonia.

Supplies and shopping - where and how to organize procurement

In Sithonia, the simple rule applies: Nikiti is the main supply center. Due to its strategic position at the crossroads of east and west, all large supermarkets (Lidl, Masoutis, Galaxias, AB) are located here, right on the main road. What you need to know:

  • Large shopping: It is most practical to do everything in Nikiti right upon arrival before heading to smaller places in the south.
  • Lidl in Marmaras: Keep in mind that this market is permanently closed.
  • Local markets: They exist in every place; they are good for supplements, but expect slightly higher prices than in large chains.

Local products and markets

Don’t miss the opportunity to buy the famous honey from Sithonia, olives, and fresh fruit directly from the producers. Markets operate only in the morning, and here is the schedule for the main places:

  • Thursday: Neos Marmaras (near the port) and Agios Nikolaos.
  • Friday: Nikiti (in the old part of town, near the church).
  • Saturday: Sikia (main station for those staying around Sarti).

Where all supermarkets are located, what the prices are, and when market days are, you can see in detail in our guide to shopping and supplies in Sithonia.

Restaurants

Of course, besides the beautiful beaches and large supermarkets, there are also a large number of restaurants, taverns where you can enjoy specialties. But which one to choose? Based on years of experience, personal visits, recommendations from locals, we recommend restaurants and specialties that are a “must-try” in Sithonia, you can see them in detail in the article Best restaurants and specialties in Sithonia and here are recommendations for cafes. Let us know your impressions when you visit them.

Practical information - what you may need on vacation

Are pets allowed on the beaches?

Pets are officially not prohibited anywhere, but during the high season on crowded beaches, you can expect reactions from people who may not like barking or dogs swimming near them. As everywhere, reactions vary for small and large dogs, as we all know well who have pets. Our advice:

  • Beach bars: Many accept pets, but always check first if there is a sign or ask the staff before you settle in.
  • Choose corners of beaches (unorganized part) or wild coves: Sithonia is full of unorganized beaches where you and your dog will be completely relaxed.
  • Avoid peak season: If you can, choose dates outside of July and August.
  • Beaches with fewer crowds: Tristinika, the large Spathies beach, Aretes, Salonikiou, Trani Ammouda (out of season), Fava, Kriaritsi, Sikia, and the long Elia coast.

Planning a trip? Read a detailed guide on traveling with pets HERE.

In our offer, we have over 900 pet-friendly accommodations. You can browse them on our website HERE - just check the “pets allowed” option in the filters along with other criteria that are important to you (yard, proximity to the beach, pool).

Parking and car safety in Sithonia?

Parking a car always carries the risk of break-ins. It may happen that someone breaks into your car in the parking lots of some well-known beaches. Most often in the parking lot of Karidi or Orange Beach. The likelihood of this happening is greater if you leave something valuable in the car.

Although break-ins are rare, they do occur in the parking lots of Orange and Karidi. The rule is simple: do not leave anything valuable in the car, not even for five minutes.

If you are traveling without a car, there is local bus transport that connects places and larger beaches, but it has a limited number of departures, so good planning is necessary. See where the local transport goes in our article: Sithonia without a car.

Laundromats

Finally, this is also important and you ask us more and more often: Where can you find laundry services in Sithonia? More and more laundromats are opening each year, and you can see a detailed list in the article here.

All places in Sithonia have decent beaches, and nearby there are always those that will leave you breathless. That’s why the best way to experience Sithonia is to explore. Sithonia has so many good beaches in all directions that it’s hard to go wrong with the choice of places.

The real value of this peninsula is that every day can look completely different to you.
