Ropoto – The Village That Disappeared, but Not Its Church
The village of Ropoto is located in the mountainous region of Trikala, in central Greece, about 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Trikala. Until 2012, it was a peaceful settlement with around 300 households, but then, due to a major landslide, almost the entire village began to sink and slide down the hill. At that moment, houses cracked, roads collapsed, and people had to leave their homes. Despite signs of unstable ground, warnings were ignored for years - until nature took its course.
In the midst of this disaster, one building remained standing — the church of the Virgin Mary. Despite leaning at a 17-degree angle, it did not collapse and remained without serious damage. Many locals and believers believe that this was not by chance, but a true miracle. Today, the church is a symbol of hope and faith, as well as a kind of tourist attraction.
In recent years, it has become particularly popular on social media. Videos of people trying to walk or pose on its inclined floor often evoke smiles and disbelief. Although the area has not been officially declared completely safe, this does not prevent visitors from coming, taking pictures, and sharing their experience.
Ropoto is now almost an abandoned place, but thanks to this unique church, both people and cameras are rediscovering it.
The symbol of resilience in the vanished village raises the question - is it a coincidence?
While we do not recommend visiting this place for safety reasons, you can watch a video about the church HERE and experience its unique story in a safe way.
