Monastery in the Rock: Legend, Beauty, and "The Big Blue"
The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, built in 1088, is one of the most unique places on the island of Amorgos. Legend has it that the icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) arrived by boat from the town of Hozova, thanks to a devout woman who sent it to save it from iconoclasts.
The monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, and its celebration is marked on November 21st every year, when a large number of believers come to attend liturgies and pilgrimages.
The construction site determined by a sign from the Heaven
Interestingly, the original site for construction was not on the cliff where the monastery is located today. Initially, they built it at a lower location, but every morning they found the walls collapsed. Until one day they found their tools in an inaccessible part of the cliff. They interpreted this as a sign from the Virgin Mary and decided to build the monastery at that location. Today, from the high cliff, the monastery shines and attracts numerous pilgrims.
The monastery is located on a cliff 300 meters above the Aegean Sea, in an almost inaccessible part of the island of Amorgos. Its white facade contrasts with the dark cliff, making it a unique sight.
The interior of the monastery is narrow and vertically organized due to its location. It has several small rooms, with the most significant being the chapel that houses the icon of Panagia Hozoviotissa.
The icon of Panagia Hozoviotissa is especially revered for the miracles attributed to its power. It is believed to protect Amorgos and its residents from danger and illness.
How to get to the monastery?
The monastery is accessed by a steep path with over 300 steps, making the pilgrimage not only challenging but also spiritually significant for visitors.
Beach, film, and popular wedding destination
At the foot of the monastery lies Agia Anna Beach, known for its turquoise sea and natural beauty. Interestingly, this beach and monastery became world-famous thanks to the cult film The Big Blue from 1988. In addition, the chapel on the beach is a favorite destination for weddings, further adding to its popularity.
Visiting Amorgos and the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is not just an opportunity to enjoy nature and cultural heritage, but also an unforgettable spiritual experience.
