August 15 - Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos - Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the three most important holidays in Greece, alongside Easter and Christmas. All places in Greece celebrate it, and a special experience is in places with churches dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. If you are in Greece on August 15th, check out where the most famous celebrations are held.

Where the fair is held and what to expect

Kassandra

  • Pefkohori (June 23): If you are here at the end of June, you will see young men lighting fires in every neighborhood and jumping over them (custom “Klidonas”). The next day, they go up the hill to the old church of St. John near the monastery of the same name. After the liturgy, the locals prepare large cauldrons of beans and sardines for everyone present. Note: in Greece, it is customary to always, with beans serve sardines, as a side dish. The taste is very good, we can say, try it.
  • Agia Paraskevi (July 26): This village is named after St. Paraskevi, so the celebration here is the most authentic. Expect a large procession (litany), followed by a fair that floods the streets with live music and performances by folk groups.
  • Nea Skioni (August 23): A very popular folk festival that gathers people from the entire southern part of Kassandra.

Sithonia

  • St. Mamas (August 29 - September 4): Located at the very beginning of Sithonia. This is an institution of northern Greece. The fair dates back to the Byzantine era.
    • What to expect: The smell of souvlaki and roasted meat at every corner, a huge amusement park, stalls with everything - from clothing to local honey and olives.
    • Atmosphere: True “folk” music, crowds, noise, and indescribable energy. It’s best to visit it in the evening after 8 p.m., but arm yourself with patience for parking and keep an eye on your wallets.
  • Nikiti and Neos Marmaras (July 26 / August 15): Celebrations here are massive because these are the largest places in the region, so the folk festivities stretch along the entire promenade.

Mainland Halkidiki and Athos

  • Arnea (July 26): St. Petka is celebrated here in a beautiful city park outside the settlement. The ambiance is fairy-tale-like, in the woods, and you can often see exhibitions of traditional textiles for which Arnea is famous. We definitely recommend visiting the village of Arnea because it is the most beautiful traditional place in northern Greece.
  • Stanos (July 7): Near Arnea, there is a small village of Stanos that celebrates Holy Sunday. The church is located in meadows outside the village, on the border with the Thessaloniki region, right next to an archaeological site. A very authentic experience that tourists rarely see.
  • Jerisos (July 20): The celebration of St. Elijah in Jerisos is known for often serving free food and wine to all visitors, which is an old custom of hospitality.

The Biggest of All: Fair in Agios Mamas (Halkidiki)

This is no ordinary fair - this is an institution. It takes place at the very beginning of Sithonia (between Kassandra and Sithonia) from August 29 to September 4.

  • Size: It is the second largest in all of Greece and the largest in the northern part of the country. It is estimated that over 200,000 people visit it.
  • Atmosphere: Here you will find everything - from A to Z. A huge number of stalls with clothes (a lot of Chinese goods), local honey, sweets, and even pets.
  • Food and Entertainment: The smell of souvlaki and roasted lambs dominates the area. The main events start in the evening (after 8 p.m.) with live music and concerts.
  • Honest advice: The amusement park is quite old and small, so children may not find it too interesting. The crowd is huge, parking is regulated by the police, but it is still difficult to find a spot.
  • Important: Due to the large crowds, keep an eye on your wallets - unfortunately\, thefts are common.

Field experience - our impression: “I have never seen a bigger fair than the one currently taking place in Agios Mamas. This is the largest fair in Northern Greece. We were surprised by the number of visitors and stalls with various goods. Of course, there is a lot of Chinese clothing, but there is also good food for meat lovers, an amusement park, honey products, local sweets…Music, the smell of souvlaki, suckling pigs and lambs on the spit, donuts… This fair has been held since the Byzantine era, and it is estimated that over 200,000 people will visit it. In my opinion, this is not interesting for children, especially younger ones, because the amusement park is small and quite old, and the crowds and noise are big. But if you want to see an authentic attraction for Greeks - I recommend visiting.” (Ana N. https://www.facebook.com/groups/livefromgreece/permalink/1446681515857843/)

Gastronomic Festivals: Flavors of Halkidiki

Gastronomic festivals are also held throughout Halkidiki. Here you can try and buy products from local producers that you cannot find in the local market. We recommend visiting them because they are the perfect place to try out various flavors and have an experience for all senses.

Dates are usually announced later, so we will definitely update when they are known.

  • Sardine Festival (Nea Moudania): Enjoy fresh fish specialties by the sea.
  • Mussel Festival (Olympiada): Perfect opportunity for seafood lovers.
  • Honey Festival (Nikiti): Tasting of the famous pine honey and bee products.
  • Olive Days (Metagitsi): Celebration of the “liquid gold” of Halkidiki.
  • Mushroom Festival (Taxiarchis): For nature and mountain flavor lovers.

Nea Skioni, Kassandra - anchovy festival

At the beginning of August, the famous Anchovy Festival is held - one of the most authentic and cheerful summer events in this part of Greece. A great opportunity to buy anchovies and prepare them or enjoy them prepared, as well as other local products, from olives to wine. During the festival, this peaceful fishing village comes to life with the smell of the sea and the taste of fresh fish, along with traditional music, dance, and hospitality for which the Greeks are known. If you are in the area during those days - stop by! It will be an opportunity to experience Nea Skioni in a completely different way. Nea Skioni is located on the western side of Kassandra and can be reached by crossroads in about 15 minutes. Nearby is a beautiful church Panagia Faneromeni about which we have written and you can visit or sit and rest in the shade of the courtyard.

The Most Unusual Fairs Throughout Greece

Kefalonia: Holy Snakes (August 15)

In the village of Markopoulo, on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, a miracle happens that attracts thousands of people. Small, harmless snakes (so-called “Agiofida”) come into the church and around the bell tower. They have a cross-shaped pattern on their heads and tongues. The faithful stroke and hold them, believing they bring luck. They appear every year at the same time and leave after a few days. Check out photos and videos taken by our collaborator in Kefalonia.

Ikaria: Never-ending Panigiri

The most popular fairs in Greece at the moment are on Ikaria. Time stands still here, and the traditional dance “Ikariotikos” lasts for days and nights without stopping. The energy is incredible and completely different from anything you have seen.

Corfu: Melody of History

In Corfu, the fairs are heavily influenced by Venetian culture. The most significant one is in the village of Kassiopi (August 15), where the traditional dances and procession evoke a special aristocratic spirit of the island.
