Last year, (2017), Greece recorded a record number of smaller tornadoes and water leechers, a total of 145. These data were published by the National Observatory in Athens.

There were exactly 136 aquatic leeches and 9 tornadoes, of which the 5 strongest in Corfu and Paxos caused more material damage.

This is the largest number of ever recorded water leeches in Greece. In Europe, last year there were a total of 616. Most leeches were seen during autumn (86), and most in November, 51. They formed mostly over the Ionian Sea and in western Greece.

Nearly two-thirds of these meteorological events were recorded thanks to social network users who posted photographs and videos.
