Summer vacation in camper van
In Serbia, the custom of using campers (not to mention camping, as these two things almost have no common points) is at a very low level, both because of, I would say, excessively high prices for the average Serbian wallet, and because people simply do not have that habit, unlike, for example, Slovenia, where this is by far the most popular way of spending annual vacations and weekends.
This very fact shapes the market for selling and renting campers in Serbia, so given the little interest of citizens, the supply here is quite modest.
In Belgrade, there are only 2 companies dealing with camper rentals, and only one of them is somewhat more serious, although it is still nowhere near the level of companies dealing with this in the West, let’s say in Slovenia.
When I say somewhat more serious, I mean that there is some choice of campers, as well as clear, precise, and predefined conditions, so that you get a camper that is ready for use (and believe me, there is a lot to be done before the trip).
Apart from these two companies in Belgrade, there is another one in Ruma, which serves as a representative of the famous Slovenian Adria for Serbia (Adria is, by the way, one of the leading global companies for production, sale, and rental of campers).
There are also several private individuals who rent out their own vehicles, but these are mostly old vehicles, in poorer condition, and with much less equipment.
People are probably most interested in the rental price, which is also influenced by the negative relationship between supply and demand, so, given that the supply is too low, even for the small demand in Serbia, renting a camper is not a cheap affair at all (but, in our opinion, it’s worth every penny :)).
The campers we have used in the last 3-4 years cost 110€ per day of use. In addition, of course, you pay for your own fuel, tolls, and other expenses during the trip.
Usually, a deposit of 1000€ is also left, which is used to cover any damages that are not covered by comprehensive insurance, i.e., damages that did not occur in traffic (for example, a broken refrigerator, stove, TV, and similar things that could happen due to the user’s negligence).
Keep in mind that for this price, you get a camper that costs over 100,000€, which has an interior space like an average studio apartment, with a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a sort of living room.
The camper has its own independent gas heating, which also powers the refrigerator, stove, and boiler.
There are 2 air conditioning units, one like in all cars, and the other one in the bedroom, which can only work on 220V, i.e., when the camper is connected to an external power source.
All other smaller devices (laptops, phones, tablets, etc.) can be charged for weeks without connecting to an external power source.
The only drawback that bothered us is that the total amount of water available is only 120L. This water is intended for both the kitchen and the bathroom, and if you have, for example, a teenage girl like me, who is used to washing her hair every day, you will have to replenish the water twice a day.
To add, when it comes to prices, if someone wants to travel with a camper in Western Europe, I recommend planning the trip so that the camper is rented in Slovenia, not in our country. And for 2 reasons.
First, the price in Slovenia, given the huge offer of a large number of companies (every larger village has a campsite that rents campers), is much lower than here, by about 30% approximately.
Second, every company that rents campers limits you with mileage, so you have the right to travel up to 300 km per day. This means that if you planned to rent a camper for, let’s say, 7 days, you have the right to travel a total of 2,100 km. So, if you start from Belgrade, this mileage is enough for you to go to, for example, Milan and back. On the other hand, if you take a camper in Slovenia, you have “saved” up to 1200 km, which you can travel through much more interesting areas than the highway in Croatia. For example, you can visit the entire French Riviera or the Swiss, Italian, and Austrian Alps or southern Italy with Rome…
I would like to emphasize that Greece is an ideal country for driving and using a camper, or conversely, a camper is ideal for use in Greece. And here’s why.
In Western countries, such highly organized societies, there are a loooot of rules about driving, parking, using campers, as well as very strict regulations when it comes to refilling water and emptying, you know, what needs to be emptied.
In Greece, there are no such regulations at all! You can do whatever you want with the camper!
For example, we parked the camper in front of the lower entrance to the Acropolis in Athens! And stayed there overnight. We parked it on every possible beach on Thassos, in the Olympic region, around Athens, and on the beaches in Athens itself (yes, right on the beach, literally, not next to or nearby), and even on the top of the mountain in Meteora!
Imagine the feeling of getting up in the morning and stepping out of the room just 3 - 4 steps to the sea. Right on the sand!
In Western European countries, you can only park the camper in designated places, there is not much choice.
Also, in Greece, as well as here, you can very easily and simply refill water at virtually every gas station (for free), which is a bit different in the West.
This camper is officially and factory designed to accommodate (and sleep) 6 people. But, based on our experiences (sometimes there were 2 of us, sometimes 4, and sometimes six), it is most comfortable when traveling with 4 adults (it can also accommodate one child or two small children).
In the sleeping area, there are two beds, which with minor modifications can be turned into one really huge, wide double bed, on which, without any problems, 3 adults can sleep.
Then, in the “living room”, above the seating area, by pressing a button, another double bed comes out of the roof, which is intended for two people.
Now, that sixth member would have to unfold the seating area and turn it into a bed, and according to the experiences of the guy who slept there, that place is not very comfortable…
As for the prices, in this company where I rented, there is no difference in the period. Only for the summer season and holidays (May 1st, New Year’s Eve), it must be booked much earlier.
In all other companies (both here and abroad), there are price differences depending on the period, so the full season is from May to October, and during that time, it is about 30% more expensive.
