A large number of individuals with chronic illnesses seldom decide to go on vacations or extended trips abroad. Many diseases require frequent treatments in healthcare facilities, and travel insurance does not cover the treatment of chronic illnesses or conditions. Consequently, utilizing healthcare services abroad can pose a significant strain on the household budget for these tourists. Even those who can afford this expense often have headaches when trying to find clinics where they can receive treatment while on vacation. When it comes to resorts in small towns, such as those commonly found in Greece, it is almost impossible to find nearby facilities that can cater to specific needs for some chronic illnesses.

Several of our guests have inquired about hospitals near popular resorts that offer dialysis services, as well as whether we have any information about the reimbursement of treatment costs abroad.

For many hemodialysis patients, the choice of vacation destination will primarily depend on the proximity of a clinic where they can receive therapy. In the following text, we have described the findings we have gathered. Please note that we have narrowed down the list of facilities to regions where we operate.

The Association of Kidney Patients organizations state that dialysis costs during holidays abroad can be partially refunded by the Republic Health Insurance Fund to all insured persons undergoing hemodialysis in Serbia. To be eligible for reimbursement, insured persons need to inform the competent branch of the Fund and the healthcare institution 30 days prior to the planned trip about the dates and duration of stay abroad. They also need to specify the number of dialysis sessions to be performed there.

After returning from the trip, the insured person submits a reimbursement request at the branch office of the Fund and attaches the original invoices (including a fiscal receipt), medical documentation from the foreign healthcare facility for the services provided based on the submitted invoices, and a photocopy of their bank account card. Invoices and medical documentation issued in Greece must be translated by a court interpreter.

The amount to be reimbursed is determined on a case-by-case basis according to the type of dialysis provided to the insured person at the expense of mandatory health insurance funds, up to the actual cost incurred. Specific information on the amount to be refunded can be obtained from the branch office’s health insurance and finance departments.

Reimbursement of dialysis costs abroad is recognized for stays of up to 30 days continuously or intermittently during the calendar year.

In Thessaloniki, dialysis can be performed in both public and private medical facilities. As foreign nationals, you would have to pay for dialysis in public institutions as well, and it is essential to schedule and arrange your appointment in advance, as public hospitals have fewer available slots than private ones.

From friends in Thessaloniki, we have a recommendation for this private center in the downtown area, Achileionmed, and by clicking the link below you can view the contact phone and email. https://achilleionmed.gr/ Another recommended center is the clinic “Κυανούς Σταυρός”. The contact email is: grammateiamtn.kyanous@euromedica.gr

Regarding public hospitals, you can check available slots and conditions (prices) at the “Ιπποκράτειο” hospital in Thessaloniki. It’s important to contact the hospital as early as possible due to high demand for appointments. The best way to contact them is via email at dnefrol@ippokratio.gr to secure your slot and clarify all details related to the treatment.

Whether you arrange an appointment in a public or private clinic, it’s advisable to have your medical documentation with you at reception, which includes your dialysis history, frequency of treatments, passport, and health insurance. This will help you avoid any complications or misunderstandings at reception.

On the following link HERE, you can make an appointment for dialysis at several clinics listed below (those with highlighted prices in parentheses). Appointment services through this site are free of charge, and you get the treatment at the official price of the clinic. Of course, you can contact each clinic directly by email or by phone given in the attachment.
