The new Beach Law in Greece protects as many as 198 beaches where we will not be able to enjoy!

These beaches have been declared Natura areas - established for the first time by Law 50922024 (“Conditions for the use of public property in coastal areas”).

These are 198 beaches across the country, within the Natura 2000 network, where concessions will be prohibited, hence the setting up of beach bars, umbrellas, sun loungers, and other commercial activities.

Protected areas are habitats of rare and endemic species of flora and fauna, key areas of biodiversity, the presence of important ecosystems in need of protection, conservation, or restoration. An example of this is the beaches where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs on Kefalonia, which most have heard of.

This decision foresees that there will be no possibility of tourist exploitation because the priority on these beaches is ecological, not developmental-investment dimension, said the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis.

What is prohibited on protected beaches in Greece?

According to this decision (KIA), it is forbidden to grant the right to use the seashore and beach, as well as any other action that could endanger the morphology and integrity regarding their ecological functions, especially:

  • the presence of motor vehicles;
  • the organization of events with more than ten people, music, or production of other sounds using devices for electric reproduction or sound amplification;
  • the setting up of mobile elements, such as tables, umbrellas, sun loungers, etc.
  • carrying out activities serving bathers or for the recreation of the population, renting sea recreational equipment, etc.
  • operation of mobile shops - refreshment kiosks;

You can view the list of all beaches on the page HERE.

Protected beaches are or will be visibly marked, and many already have an explanation of why they are protected, which is interesting to discover if you come across any of them.
