Afitos is one of the oldest settlements on the Kassandra peninsula, with roots tracing back to the Bronze Age and a rich historical heritage. In antiquity, it was known as Afytis. It functioned as a prominent city-state with its currency, a temple dedicated to Ammon Zeus, and active involvement in the Persian Wars. Today, echoes of the past are quietly reflected in stone facades and carved inscriptions that still adorn houses in the village center. Perched on a cliff above the Toroneos Gulf, Afitos doesn’t seek to impress — it charms with its subtle beauty. Cobbled paths, flower-filled squares, tranquil mornings, and evenings with live music create an authentic atmosphere. The village has evolved naturally, now offering tavernas with traditional recipes, galleries featuring local artists, cafés with stunning sea views, and artisan shops that preserve the spirit of its past. At the heart of the village are the 19th-century Church of Saint Demetrius and the Aletras House, now a folklore museum that showcases the everyday life of its former inhabitants. At the foot of the cliff lie the beaches Varkes, Liosi, and Moudounou, reached via narrow paths lined with pine trees and summer fragrances. Crystal-clear waters, natural shade, and serene surroundings make them ideal for families and for anyone seeking peace away from the crowds. Even during peak season, Afitos stays true to itself. Though visitor numbers may rise, the village retains its authenticity, dinners are still served by candlelight, neighbors greet each other by name, and tradition flows naturally through everyday life. Afitos is often the choice of travelers seeking a blend of cultural experience, local charm, and a peaceful retreat, as well as a great starting point for exploring the rest of Kassandra. The accommodation is approximately 74 kilometers from Thessaloniki International Airport.
