In an era when work increasingly comes with Wi-Fi and a laptop, it’s no wonder that more and more people are opting for remote work, from places that inspire. And is there a more inspiring place than Greece? Sun, sea, olives, traditional taverns, and now - a visa for digital nomads.

What is the digital nomad visa in Greece?

In 2021, Greece adopted Law 48252021, which allows remote workers from outside the EU to legally reside and work from Greece. This visa allows a stay of up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension in the form of a residence permit (Digital Nomad Residence Permit) for an additional two years, with the right to extend every 2 years.
Important: this visa does not allow employment with Greek companies. Work must be for an employer or clients outside Greece.

Who can apply?

All citizens of countries that are not EU/EEA members, who work remotely as employees or self-employed, and who can prove that they have stable income from abroad. Members of EU/EEA are all EU member states and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

What are the financial requirements?

The minimum monthly income must be:
3,500 euros net for one person.
+20% for a spouse or partner.
+15% for each child.

Important: This amount is not proven by a single payment, but by continuity. Ideally, provide pay stubs, contracts, income reports, tax returns, or bank statements for at least the past three months.

What documentation is required?

When applying at the Greek consulate in your country of residence, you need to submit:
- Completed visa application form.
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity).
- Proof of employment or work (contract\, self-employment statement\, income reports).
- Proof of regular income (bank statement\, tax return\, etc.).
- Proof of health insurance valid in Greece.
- Declaration that you will not work for a Greek company.
- Proof of address (when applying for a residence permit\, if extending the visa).

Visa fee: 75 euros + residence permit fee (150 euros if applying from Greece).

Tax benefits for nomads in Greece

One of the biggest advantages for digital nomads in Greece is 50% exemption from income tax for up to 7 years. This applies to those who become Greek tax residents and move from abroad to Greece for the first time.

Cost of living in Greece

For those coming from Serbia, Greece is attractive not only for its climate but also for its reasonable cost of living:

Rent:

Apartment in Thessaloniki: 300–500 € per month.
Apartment in smaller towns in northern Greece: 200–400 € per month.
Luxurious apartments or seaside locations can be significantly more expensive, especially in the summer.

Utilities:

Electricity: 40–90 € per month (depending on consumption and air conditioning).
Water: 10–20 € per month.
Internet: around 25–30 € per month for fast optical internet.

Food:

The price of basic groceries is similar to that in Serbia.
Restaurants and cafes are more affordable outside tourist areas.

Why is Greece perfect for digital nomads?

Imagine starting your workday with a view of the sea and ending it with a swim in the Aegean. Greece offers just that. The climate is mild throughout the year, the infrastructure is high-quality (especially in cities like Athens and Thessaloniki), and the culture and lifestyle encourage a balance between work and life.

For Serbian citizens, an additional advantage is the linguistic and cultural proximity, as well as the frequent direct flights and land connections with Greece.

The digital nomad visa for Greece opens doors to all who wish to combine work and life in a country with three seas. Whether you’re a freelancer, IT professional, entrepreneur, or work remotely for a foreign company, Greece can welcome you as a new base.

For more information, visit the website of the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum (migration.gov.gr) or the nearest Greek consulate. Prepare in advance, because your summer may look completely different when you spend it working with a view of the Aegean.
