Before selecting your internet package for travel, the most important step is to verify whether your mobile phone supports eSIM technology.

Although most newer models are equipped with this feature, older devices still exclusively use physical SIM cards.

To learn all about the benefits of a digital card and see the package offer for Greece and 150 other countries around the world, read our main guide: Nikana eSIM - internet as soon as you cross the border - in more than 150 countries around the world.

eSIM is becoming the standard, but do not purchase packages before verifying if your phone supports eSIM.

Quick check in 10 seconds (Universal method)

Regardless of the model, the easiest way to check is as follows:

  • 1. Open the dialing keyboard (as if you were going to make a call).
  • 2. Enter the code: *#06#
  • 3. If, beside the IMEI number, the EID number appears on the screen, your phone supports eSIM.
  • If the EID number appears, the device supports eSIM (in 99% of cases, this is sufficient).
  • However, some devices do not display EID, so it is safest to manually check if the phone supports eSIM in the phone settings.

EID (Embedded Identity Document) is the unique identification number of the eSIM chip, and its display indicates that the device supports digital SIM technology.

If your phone supports eSIM, you can set up the internet before your trip — without waiting in lines and without changing cards. Choose Nikana eSIM package and secure internet before departure.

Note: The list is not exhaustive — many newer models not listed also support eSIM.

Apple iPhone

Apple is a pioneer in introducing eSIM. All models from 2018 onwards support this option:

  • iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and newer models (all models: mini, Pro, Max).
  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR.
  • iPhone SE (2020 and 2022).
  • Note: Models purchased in China or Hong Kong often have two physical slots and do not support eSIM.

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung has introduced eSIM in its premium series:

  • S series: S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 (including FE, +, and Ultra models).
  • Z series: All Flip and Fold models.
  • A series: Newer mid-range models like A54 5G, A55, and A35. Note: eSIM support in the A series depends on the market. It is mostly available in the EU, but not 100% universal. If you are unsure, contact us and we will gladly check for you: support@nikana-esim.com (support in Serbian).

Xiaomi

Xiaomi introduces eSIM support mainly in newer high-end models:

  • Xiaomi 12T Pro, 13 series, 14 series, 15 series.
  • Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G.

Google Pixel

All models from Pixel 3 to the latest (Pixel 8, 9) support eSIM.

How to check through Settings

If you want to be 100% sure, follow these steps on your device:

For iPhone users: Settings > Mobile Data.

  • If you see the option Add eSIM or Set up Mobile Data, your phone is ready.

For Android users (Samsung, Xiaomi): Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.

  • If you see the option Add eSIM, the phone supports the technology.

Important notes before purchase

1. Network Unlock (Sim-Free):

  • Your phone must be “unlocked” for all networks. If the phone was obtained through an operator and is still locked to their network, eSIM providers like Nikana may not work.

2. Regional restrictions:

  • Certain models manufactured for specific markets (e.g., China or Hong Kong) do not have an eSIM chip, even if it is a model that usually has one.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?

If your device is not on the list, do not worry. You can still use traditional local SIM cards that you can purchase in Greece. For more details, read our article: Local SIM cards in Greece - tips and prices.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ:

Does eSIM consume more battery?

  • Answer: No, eSIM does not consume more battery compared to a traditional SIM card.
  • Modern phones are optimized to work with digital cards.
  • Battery consumption may slightly increase only in areas where the signal is very weak (because the phone then consumes more energy to stay connected), but this applies to all types of cards, not just eSIM.

Can I use eSIM and physical SIM card?

  • Answer: Yes! This is one of the biggest advantages.
  • Your physical card (Serbian number) remains in the phone for receiving calls and SMS messages, while you use eSIM exclusively for mobile internet in Greece.
  • In the phone settings, simply specify that “Mobile Data” should be used from the eSIM, while your primary card remains active for everything else.

Does eSIM work without roaming?

  • Answer: Technically, the eSIM you purchase for Greece uses the roaming network of Greek operators, so the “Data Roaming” option must be enabled in settings.
  • This roaming is used exclusively for the eSIM card.
  • Your phone treats the eSIM as a completely separate line, not for your number with MTS, Yettel, A1, or another operator.

Important note: This does not cost you anything extra! You only pay the price of the selected eSIM package, and by enabling roaming on the eSIM card, you only allow the phone to use the internet of Greek networks. Your primary (Serbian) card will not incur costs if you turn off data transmission.
