Avoid inconvenience in Greece
Tourists adore Greece because they feel at home there. There are no strict rules, it is safe for both adults and children, beach access is free, and no one will hassle you to buy something.
However, there are certain rules that must be followed.
Rules in Greece that tourists should adhere to
Using the pool
If the accommodation you rented has a pool and a bar in the yard, bringing your own food and drinks, even water from your room, is usually not allowed. The pool bar is a café and a “shop” in itself, so it is considered impolite to bring your own drinks and food. If you do so, the owners will probably warn you.
Sunbeds and umbrellas in beach bars
The same applies to beach bars. If you use the sunbeds of a beach bar, you are obliged to pay for them or order a drink. Bringing your own drink is not allowed, and in some bars, not even your own water and food, including fruit. It is best to ask before settling on a sunbed to avoid putting yourself in an unpleasant situation.
There is a completely different situation where a bar has occupied the entire beach, so you cannot put your own towel. In that case, see what you can do in our article here: Greece determined to preserve beaches for everyone - MyCoast app as a solution
House rules in Greece
Accommodations usually have house rules that prohibit swimming in the pool between 2 pm and 5 pm and after 8 pm or 9 pm. For more details on house rules that are not only useful but also mandatory for all to follow, read here: House rules in Greece - rules that apply to tourists on vacation
Going shopping in swimwear
As a rule, going to supermarkets, pharmacies, and other stores only in swimwear is not allowed, and in the restaurants of luxury hotels, you cannot enter in shorts, only in longer bermuda shorts or trousers.
Parking in Greece
Parking rules in resorts are becoming stricter and stricter, and when the crowds start during the peak season, it is important to be considerate and not park in places where you can obstruct traffic. This especially applies to main streets and busy areas of resorts. Often during the season, Greek police remove plates from improperly parked cars. If this happens to you, the fine ranges from 40 to 80€ and must be paid at the post office. For more details on all regulations and fines, read here: Traffic regulations in Greece
Water usage in Greece
It happens that guests use the tap in the villa’s yard to wash their car. This practice is not acceptable at all, even if the owners feel uncomfortable pointing it out. First and foremost, during the summer, even watering gardens is prohibited due to limited water supplies, and if all tourists were to wash their cars on the street or in the yards, there would be a general water shortage.
Air conditioning use in Greece
One of the major issues owners face with their guests is the habit of leaving the air conditioning on while at the beach. The air conditioning can cool a studio or apartment in a few minutes, so there is no need for it to be on all day to have the temperature to your liking when you return from the beach. If air conditioners in all apartments were left on all day, the owner would not be able to cover just the electricity costs from the earnings, not to mention the negative ecological aspect of this practice.
