Lefkada belongs to the Ionian archipelago and it is the fourth largest island in the Ionian sea. It’s very unique because it’s actually connected to the mainland of Greece with a 50 m long drawbridge. Therefore, there is no ferry to Lefkada.

It has an area of 3025 m2 and about 23.000 people occupy it. Its coastline is 117 km long.
Corfu island is north from Lefkada, while Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos (which is a bit further away) are south from it. Even though it’s most commonly addressed as an island, Lefkada is actually an archipelago which consists of 24 islands, both smaller and larger. It was named after its white cliffs (lefko means white in Greek). It is known for its bright, almost white rocks, gravel of the same color, a magnificent milky blue sea color on its most famous beaches and untouched nature which is consisted of impenetrable hills which are dominated by cypresses, olive and pine trees. About 70% of the island is covered by mountains and two of their peaks are over 1000 m above sea level.

Lefkada has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the middle ages it belonged to Byzantine, but then it fell under the Turkish reign. In fact, Lefkada is the only Ionian island that has ever been ruled by Turks. It was annexed to the Greek kingdom in 1864.

It has a mediterranean climate, which means it has long summers with lots of sun and a pleasant breeze, and short, rainy winters.

It’s capital is called Lefkas and it is located on the northern side of the island. It’s the first populated place you will come across when you cross the drawbridge. The road signs usually say Lefkada instead of Lefkas, because the islanders call it that way too. Lefkas is a 20-minute ride from the international airport in Preveza.
It’s the largest city on Lefkada, and also the administrative and cultural center of the island. It has about 8000 inhabitants.

The most popular touristic place on the island is Nidri and it’s located on the east coast. Vasiliki is on the south and it represents the surfing center of not only Lefkada, but the entirety of the Mediterranean.

Egremni and Porto Katsiki are some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and according to some people, maybe even the entire world.

Lefkada (Lefkas) is 890 km away from Belgrade.
