Thessaloniki Metro
The metro in Thessaloniki has become a reality after almost four decades of work, representing a crucial step towards solving the long-standing transportation issues in the city center. The construction of this metro, which began in 1986 and is set to be completed in 2024, faced numerous challenges such as delays, technical difficulties, financial crises, and archaeological finds that repeatedly postponed the works. Despite everything, the dream of the people of Thessaloniki has finally been realized.
The Thessaloniki metro includes 13 modern stations and spans 9.6 kilometers in both directions. It can accommodate about 18,000 passengers per hour in one direction, with a total of 254,000 passengers expected daily. The metro trains are air-conditioned, use state-of-the-art driverless technology, and are equipped with safety doors on the platforms for maximum passenger safety, achieving an average speed of 80 km/h. The journey from one end of the city to the other, which takes about 40 minutes by car, will now be possible in just 17 minutes by metro.
The 13 stations of the Thessaloniki metro that will be the first to open on November 30, 2024 are:
- Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos
- Dimokratias
- Venizelou
- Agia Sofia
- Sintrivani/Ekthesi
- Panepistimio
- Papafi
- Efkleidi
- Flemingk
- Analipseos 25th Martiou
- Voulgari
- Nea Elvetia
The extension of the metro towards Kalamaria, which is in its final stages, covers an additional 4.78 kilometers of line with five new stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra). The extension is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, increasing the daily number of passengers by an additional 63,000.
Hellenic Metro recently released photos of all stations, except for the Venizelou station, which will be unveiled as a special surprise for the opening on November 30, 2024, about which we will inform you on our social media.
