Guide to Local Markets in Thessaloniki – Where to Buy Fresh Products
Discover the schedule of markets in Thessaloniki, locations by city parts, and tips for shopping at authentic local ‘laiki’ markets.
If you are in Thessaloniki, we have prepared for you this brief guide through the markets with a schedule of when they take place in which part of the city.
From parsley to locomotive - everything can be found at the green ‘laiki’ market.
For lovers of truly getting to know the “soul” of the city, these markets are a real feast for the eyes.
In Thessaloniki, the green markets do not have a permanent place but are in a different part of the city every day. In no time, side streets are closed, stalls are set up, and shopping can begin. From fish, olives, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, everything can be found at them.
What are the prices like at the green markets in Thessaloniki?
Prices are significantly lower compared to prices on the islands (as we compared with colleagues).
Also, prices depend on the part of the city where the market is located. So, at the same vendor, one day the goods can be at one price, and the next day in the neighboring district, at a slightly higher price. The vendor explained to us that it depends on whether they are in a “more expensive” neighborhood or not. But in any case, the prices are very favorable.
There are also stalls that sell discounted items from stores at very favorable prices starting from 3 euros (there are even items for 1 euro).

Tips for shopping at markets in Thessaloniki
Markets usually operate from early morning until around 2 p.m., so it is best to come early to have the widest selection of fresh products.
If you want to buy fruits, vegetables, or olives at lower prices, wait until the end of the market - then vendors lower prices to sell off their goods.
Most markets also have stalls with clothing, shoes, and household items, as we mentioned above, often with clearance sales.
If you enjoy visiting markets and experiencing the true spirit of Thessaloniki, we recommend finding out when the “laiki” market is in the part of the city where you are staying and taking a stroll. It’s worth it.
