Find contacts of doctors in Greece, private clinics and state health centers in our comprehensive tourist guide. You will discover how to locate doctors, properly activate insurance, avoid unnecessary stress and handle emergencies while on vacation.
Illness or accident are the last things you want to think about on vacation, but experience has taught us - the most important thing is to have a plan before panic sets in. Based on our years of experience and field data, we have prepared this comprehensive guide that will help you know at all times:
- What to do in emergencies (and which numbers are toll-free);
- How to properly activate insurance without unnecessary costs;
- Where to find doctors and state hospitals in the region where you are vacationing;
- Advice for pregnant women and patients on hemodialysis (organization and protocols);
- List of answers to all common questions you ask us every day.
When an accident occurs while on vacation, the most important thing is:
- Stay calm
- Have accurate information
1. First steps and travel insurance
Before seeking a doctor, it is crucial to know how your system works. A travel health insurance policy is mandatory, but it is not a “free service card” at every clinic.
- Activation: First call the phone number on your policy (insurance call center). They will direct you to the nearest clinic they have a contract with.
- Payment: If you go on your own without calling directly, you pay for the service on the spot, and upon return, you reimburse the costs with original receipts and medical report.
- More details: Everything about travel health insurance
Why is that first call to the call center crucial? It protects you from unnecessary spending money that you may not have planned in your budget.
However, we know how it works in practice: if your child gets a fever in the middle of the night and you don’t call the insurance, in the table below you will find links to the list of doctors by regions with their phone numbers and addresses. If you are in a small town, on the lists you will find doctors who come by appointment or the nearest place where there is a doctor.
Important for reimbursement: If you have not been able to contact the insurance before the examination, do so immediately after the intervention (by phone or email). Be sure to keep the doctor’s report and the original fiscal receipt - this is your only proof without which you will not be able to get your money back.
If the situation is more serious and requires urgent intervention from public services, see below for toll-free numbers available 24⁄7.
2. Emergency assistance and important phone numbers
In case of life-threatening situations, universal numbers available 24⁄7 are used:
- 112 - European emergency number (police\, ambulance\, fire brigade).
- 166 - EKAB (Greek ambulance service).
- List by locations: View the complete list of police numbers, port authorities, and emergency services here: Important phone numbers in Greece.
Tips for easier communication:
- Language is not a barrier: If you do not speak English or Greek, prepare two to three sentences in advance on Google Translate (e.g. “A doctor is needed, we are in place X, address Y”) and read them to the operator.
- Call the accommodation owner if present or a local neighbor: Our years of experience show that accommodation owners in Greece almost always come to the rescue. They can quickly explain the location to emergency services or take you to the nearest doctor.
Where to seek free assistance (24⁄7)?
In addition to private clinics, in Greece there are state health centers (Kentro Ygeias). They are available 24 hours a day and provide free first aid to all tourists (only a minimal fee for examination is paid).
- In Sithonia: The main Health Center is located in Agios Nikolaos.
- In Thassos: The Health Center is in Prinos.
- In Kassandra: Doctors in Pefkohori, Hanioti, and Polihrono.
- In Athos: Health care in Jerisos and surroundings.
- In the region of Saint George (Stavros, Asprovalta): Private clinics are available, while emergencies are referred to hospitals in Thessaloniki.
- In Lefkada: In the city of Lefkada there is a modern General Hospital that accepts emergency cases 24⁄7.
- In the region of Epirus (Parga, Vrahos, Sivota): In Parga, Vrahos, and Sivota there are clinics, while emergencies are handled by the hospital in Preveza.
When to call other services? In addition to medical assistance, sometimes you need other services:
- Police: In case of theft, loss of documents, or a traffic accident.
- Fire brigade: If you notice a fire or smoke in the forest, settlement, or accommodation where you are, immediately call and report the location.
- Port authorities (Limenarcheio): Call them in case of any accidents at sea, dangerous situations on the beach, or if you need water transport.

Pregnant women: Before traveling, it is crucial to check your travel insurance policy, as most cover pregnancy complications only up to 28th week. Also, we advise you to always have the latest gynecological report with you.

FAQ: Quick answers to your most common questions
(This section was compiled based on thousands of your comments and questions we receive every season)
What if the doctor in my town does not directly cooperate with my insurance?
This does not mean you cannot be examined. You will pay for the service in cash on the spot (usually from €50 onwards), and the insurance will reimburse you upon return. Condition: You must have the original medical report and fiscal receipt. Without paperwork, the insurance does not recognize the expense.
Are state health centers (Health Centers) free?
Yes, these centers (like those in Prinos or Agios Nikolaos) provide emergency care for free or with a symbolic participation. However, be prepared for crowds. They are not a substitute for your chosen doctor, but places for emergencies.
Does insurance cover sea urchin spine removal?
Attention: This is a common trap. Many insurances do not treat sea urchin spine removal as an emergency but as an accident that can be resolved without a doctor, so they often refuse payment. If you go to a private facility, be prepared to pay yourself. In state health centers, this will be done for free.
What if I need a dentist?
Dental services in Greece are expensive and private. Travel insurance covers only emergencies (acute pain) usually up to €100. Anything beyond that is paid by you.
How can I buy antibiotics in Greece?
Under no circumstances without a prescription. Greek laws are very strict; in Greece, a pharmacist can lose their license if they sell you antibiotics without a prescription from a Greek doctor.
