Your summer vacation in Athos can be complemented by a trip to the archaeological site, the excavations of the Monastery of Zygos, right on the border with Mount Athos. The Monastery of Zygos has been a metochion of the Hilandar Monastery since 1199.

The archaeological site is located 2km from Ouranoupolis, where excursion boats depart to visit Mount Athos, so you can combine both visits and make the most of your day.

From this site, a small mountain road leads to the very wall that separates Mount Athos from the rest of Athos. Note that access to the wall is usually closed towards the end of working hours, so plan your visit early if you want to see it.

While the monastery was active, it was also open to women - this was the closest point from which they could approach Mount Athos - and this is still the case today.

The Long History of Monastery of Zygos (Μονή Ζυγού), a Metochion of Hilandar

Monastery of Zygos, (Μονή Ζυγού) also known as Frangokastro was founded in the mid-10th century, with the first reliable records of its existence dating back to 996. However, there are indications that it was built on the remains of buildings (likely a basilica) dating back to the 4th and 6th centuries AD.

During the 11th century, this monastery was one of the most significant monasteries of Mount Athos, but it was abandoned at the end of the 12th century and in 1199, Emperor Alexios III Angelos assigned it, as a metochion, to the re-established Hilandar Monastery.

After the Fourth Crusade (1204), the monastery was occupied by a Frankish lord who turned it into a fortress and used it as a base for plundering attacks on Mount Athos. The Frankish lord held the monastery until around 1211 when he was expelled by order of the Pope. Due to this episode, the ruins are now called Frangokastro - “Frankish Castle”.

What Can You See at This Site?

Monastery of Zygos was dedicated to the prophet Elijah, and its central church was built in the form of a cross-in-square church, characteristic of Byzantine architecture.

Within the complex, there are two funerary chapels, and research has shown that the monastery was built in four phases during the first quarter of the 11th century.

You will also see the remains of towers and fortification walls that were strengthened during the siege by the Frankish lord, when unfortunately the monastery was turned into a castle.

During the archaeological excavations, a large number of finds were discovered, testifying to the monastic life, trade, and the defensive role of the place.

The well-preserved specimens of floor mosaics and marble decoration are of particular significance. Their exceptionally good craftsmanship represents a true treasure of Byzantine architecture and style.

Take the time to read the historical explanations on the panels - they are placed along the path and within the complex.

Restoration and conservation work is still ongoing, and the area is neatly marked and visitor-friendly.
