If you are a fan of modern history and maritime history, you can visit the ship-museum Velos at the end of the new promenade (Nea Paralie) and learn more about modern Greek history and the ship that became a symbol of Greek resistance to dictatorship.

History of the ship Velos

“Velos” is a war navy ship of the “fletcher” type and was in service of the Greek navy between 1959-1991, when it was decommissioned. The ship was built and launched in Boston in 1942 under the name “USS CHARETTE”, and from the following year, it was in service of the American navy. During World War II, the ship participated in military operations in the Pacific.

In 1959, Greece took over the ship and gave it the name “Velos”, which it carries to this day.

In 1973, this ship was one of the vessels that “escaped” from Greece during the junta (1967-1974) to Italy, during NATO exercises.

In 1991, the ship will retire, and after three years, it will be refurbished and declared a Museum of Anti-Dictatorial Struggle in Poros. After the initial location in Poros, as of September 9, 2019, it remains permanently anchored at Nea Paralia in Thessaloniki, right in front of the city’s Concert Hall and remains open to the public until today.

“Velos” is a key element of resistance to dictatorship and a floating museum that is truly rare to witness. Therefore, be sure to visit it if you have the opportunity.
