Thessaloniki Sightseeing Bus – The Easiest Way to Explore the City
If you wish to visit the most important sights of Thessaloniki in a short time, the SightSeeing bus is an excellent choice. It is the only official city tourist bus with an open top, offering panoramic views and the freedom to choose where to get off and how long to stay.

During the tour, an audio guide is available in 11 languages, so you can learn more about the history and significance of each location you visit. The tour lasts about 70 minutes if you ride without getting off, but it is recommended to plan a whole day if you want to visit more places.

Main Stops of Sightseeing Thessaloniki
Starting Point – White Tower
The starting point of the bus is at the White Tower (behind the tower when viewed from the sea), where there are kiosks where you can buy tickets. The tower is a symbol of Thessaloniki, a fortress from the 15th century that was once part of the city walls and defense system. Today, it is a recognizable landmark of the city and a museum you can visit. Detailed description and museum hours: White Tower of Thessaloniki: from a former prison to today’s museum
Stop No. 2 – Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
Opened in 1962, it houses archaeological finds from the area of Thessaloniki and Macedonia. We recommend setting aside an hour or two for a visit to this museum.
Stop No. 3 – Church of Saint Sophia (Agia Sophia)
For many years the cathedral of Thessaloniki, a large basilica with a dome, built on the site of an older church and modeled after the famous Hagia Sophia in former Constantinople, now Istanbul. You can read more about the church here: Church of Saint Sophia in Thessaloniki: historical guide through the spiritual center and UNESCO monument
Stop No. 4 – Church of Saint Demetrius
Dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki, it holds a special place among the city’s churches. Take the time to visit as the church also has catacombs worth seeing. To make your visit more meaningful, read more about the church in our text here: Church and catacombs of Saint Demetrius in Thessaloniki: Spiritual and historical landmark of Greece
Stop No. 5 – Byzantine Walls (Fortress and city walls)
Walls and fortifications dating from the Byzantine period with great archaeological and historical significance. We recommend taking some time to visit this part of the city called Ano Poli (Upper Town) and see a completely different Thessaloniki - a maze of narrow streets with houses inside the walls where time seems to have stood still. Also, from the fortress, you can enjoy a panoramic view you won’t forget. Texts that will help you plan your visit to the fortress are:

Ano Poli - Old Town of Thessaloniki
In this part of the city, you can visit many very significant and old churches that are also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, one of which is the endowment of a Serbian king. See them here: Monuments of Thessaloniki on the World Heritage List
Stop No. 6 – Arch of Galerius (Kamara)
This triumphal arch was erected in honor of the Roman Emperor Galerius, along with the famous Rotunda, which was his mausoleum but also the earliest Christian basilica where we can still enjoy the painted wall over 2 millennia later. Read more about these two monuments from ancient times here:

Stop No. 7 – Aristotelous Square
The most famous city square, a blend of architectural history and modern Thessaloniki. Besides the magnificent appearance and a lovely walk on the square with a beautiful view of the sea, you can also enjoy the panorama from the top-floor café of the Electra Palace Hotel or peek into the “centennial commercial heart of the city” - the Kapani market which is entered precisely from the square.

Stop No. 8 – Port of Thessaloniki
The port in Thessaloniki has a history of about 2,300 years and represents a key maritime gate of northern Greece and the Balkan region. It is located not far from Aristotelis Square, looking at the sea from the right side. You will most likely notice some of the large ships anchored in the port. Today, in addition to its transport role, the port has a developed cultural and tourist aspect - at Pier 1 in the historical building of Warehouse A, the Cinema Museum (Thessaloniki Cinema Museum) is located, along with other cultural facilities. The port is also a place where maritime, trade, and cultural tourism converge, making it one of the city’s most important points.
