Santorini - magical volcanic island
Santorini is located in the Aegean Sea and it’s the southernmost island of the Cyclades island group. The island covers an area of 76km2 and it’s one of the largest marine extinct volcanoes in the world. On this most romantic Greek island, you will enjoy in this exquisitely clear water while perched on the rim of a massive active volcano in the middle of the sea, as well as the most beautiful sunsets from the town of Oia.
Precisely because of this, Santorini is valid for one of the most beautiful places in the world where you can spend your honeymoon. Beautiful narrow streets with many restaurants, bars, taverns, souvenir and jewellery shops and beautiful views of the Aegean, will give you an unforgettable experience.
Fira is the capital of the island, and together with Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani, it’s located high above on a cliff, making the so-called Caldera’s eyebrow, the balcony of Santorini. Amazing view is completed with the beaches with red and black sand, as well as the white houses with blue windows, typical for the Greek coast. The main attraction of the city is 300-meter long ropeway which, through incredible landscapes of hardened lava, leads to the edge of a volcano.
The whole group of Santorini islands is still an active volcano and probably the only one in the world, where the crater is located in the sea. The former bottom of the volcano is today the bay within the islands of Santorini, which historically has been strategically important and influenced the turbulent history of the islands. The last eruption of the volcano and a great earthquake occurred in 1950 when the majority of the population emigrated to continental Greece.
Today, the entire island is one huge geological museum where you can find a variety of geological structure and form. The most famous and most beautiful beach is Monolithos, located at 5km from Kamari. On the north coast of the island is Oia, a place with marble-white streets that descend on the edge of a dormant volcano. It’s known for the most luxurious hotels and the magnificent sunsets.
In the south of Santorini is located Akrotiri, the most important archaeological site in Cyclades area, where a famous legend of the lost city of Atlantis Mediterranean was made. A visit to Santorini is a unique experience and anyone who likes to travel should not fail to feel the charm of this pearl of the Aegean.
