Traditional villages in Sithonia
Whenever we visit a new region or island in Greece, we are in search of traditional villages.
Tourist places on the coast are tailored to tourists, while places inland are usually the soul of the region and the island.
Off-season, life unfolds precisely in those places. In Thassos, Teologos has more inhabitants during the winter than Potos, Panagia more than Golden Beach…
In Sithonia, Agios Nikolaos is completely insignificant to tourists because it is not on the coast, but it is very important to the residents. Most accommodation owners in Vourvourou and Ormos Panagias actually live in Agios Nikolaos. It is the only place that has a health center and a police station, and while after the season Sarti, for example, is almost completely empty, Agios Nikolaos thrives. Children from Sarti in the 5th grade travel to Sykia for school, which is perhaps the liveliest and largest place in Sithonia.
During the winter, Nikiti completely freezes, all the houses are closed, but the old Nikiti is alive.
If you also enjoy experiencing the true Greece during your summer vacation, do not forget to visit these inland places, have a coffee in the old square, and breathe in the spirit of authentic Greece.
In the photos, you can see the old Nikiti which we recommend you visit on a summer evening. You can reach the old Nikiti on foot from the main road.
