Diaporos island

The island of Diaporos is the largest island in the archipelago of 9 islands belonging to Sithonia. These islands are the closest to the place of Vourvourou, sheltering it and thus providing it with always calm waters.

About of the island of Diaporos:

  • Location: near the town of Vourvourou
  • Most famous: Blue Lagoon and Myrsini Beach
  • Access: exclusively by boat
  • For whom: nature lovers, turquoise sea and adventure enthusiasts
  • Particular: independent exploration by boat

The island of Diaporos is less known to our tourists, but many tourists from all over the world come to Sithonia just for the turquoise waters and beautiful beaches that this island offers.

Various agencies in Sithonia offer organized cruises to the island of Diaporos, which are certainly beautiful, but we recommend exploring this gem of Sithonia independently.

How to get to the island?

In the town of Vourvourou, there are a large number of agencies for renting motorboats.

Boat rental prices:
  • Smaller boat (up to 4 people): €100 - €120 / day
  • Larger boat (6-7 people): €180 - €200 / day
  • Luxury boats: several hundred euros per day

Rental hours: approximately 09:00 - 17:30

It is important to know that prices are rapidly increasing, as boat rentals and visits to Diaporos and the Blue Lagoon are becoming more popular.

  • The most affordable boats have a power of 25 horsepower, and a license is not necessary for renting a boat with up to 30 horsepower.
  • Fuel consumption is paid separately by simply noting how much you have used from the full tank you received at the start, and fuel will cost you around €30 - €50, depending on how much you drive.
  • They consume approximately 1.5 liters per nautical mile (1.852 kilometers).
  • Operating a boat without a license is very simple, so after a five-minute explanation you receive when renting, you are ready to embark on your adventure.
  • You cannot drive the boat quickly, so children can also be great captains if the sea is calm.
  • The fact that all passengers can try their hand at driving certainly contributes to a well-spent day.

Diaporos is not touristically developed, so besides a few private villas, there are no other facilities on it. For this reason, upon departure from the agency, you also receive a portable refrigerator in which you can pack food and water.

It is necessary to plan boat rental in advance, as it often happens that you have to wait for availability for 3 to 4 days, and even more during the peak season.

Considering that, in our opinion, exploring the island of Diaporos is one of the best days possible in Sithonia, we recommend securing a boat for the date that suits you as soon as you arrive.

When making a reservation, it is necessary to pay 30% of the boat rental amount as a deposit, which is refunded if you cancel the reservation the day before departure.

There is no possibility of refunding the deposit in case of cancellation on the day of departure. It is best to inquire about cancellation conditions when booking, as there are differences from agency to agency.

What to see on Diaporos?

After setting off from the mainland, you immediately come across Myrsini Beach. We left it for last, but you can also visit it at the beginning. We wanted to take a little ride first, get an impression of the size of the island and the surroundings, and then make stops.

Follow the route marked on the map you receive at the agency and you can avoid rocky reefs in the sea. The boat moves very slowly, so there is no chance of running aground or colliding with another boat, but caution is advised.

When we reached the Blue Lagoon, we couldn’t resist taking a break. The Blue Lagoon is something that is truly rare to see and cannot be described in words. A large sea expanse, like a huge pool between the island of Diaporos and Agios Isidoros, with turquoise, shimmering, and shallow water. Swimming in this natural pool will remain one of the most beautiful memories for you. There is also a small beach where you can relax and swim in the Blue Lagoon, which truly offers enjoyment for all senses. The sea floor near the rocks is completely covered with shells, and diving due to the rich marine life is very interesting.

After this fantastic experience, you can continue further and make stops at several beaches along the way, but since they, in our opinion, are nothing special compared to Myrsini Beach, which is yet to come, or Lagonisi Beach which is nearby, we decided not to stop and waste time, but to head straight to Lagonisi Beach.

You can reach Lagonisi Beach by land, of course, but it is also a nice experience by boat. A long shallow, white sand, unbelievably light-blue water, clear and transparent, truly beautiful…

Since we wanted to enjoy the Blue Lagoon once again, we didn’t circle the island but decided to return the same way we came and head back to the Blue Lagoon.

After two hours of enjoyment there, we reluctantly left and headed towards Myrsini Beach. What awaited us there was another new and pleasant surprise.

Myrsini Beach exceeded all our expectations in beauty. Although we heard that some tourists consider it the most beautiful beach in all of Sithonia, we did not expect it to be so beautiful and special. The water is a gentle blue, with white sand, small coves, beautiful and rounded rocks. This beach is truly one of the most beautiful coves in Sithonia.

We returned the boat at 2 minutes to 6 pm, full of impressions and thrilled with what we saw.

Our tour of Sithonia would definitely not be complete without visiting the island of Diaporos.

It is possible that we missed some beautiful beaches and places on Diaporos because we were enchanted by the Blue Lagoon and spent most of our time there, but we have no regrets. It was worth it.

Upon return, we paid for fuel. A full tank costs €35 and is sufficient to circle the island 3 times if you choose the weakest boat.

Some boat rental agencies

We do not have a specific recommendation for any, so it is best to contact as many as possible to see who offers the best conditions.
