Guide to Local Markets in Thessaloniki – Where to Buy Fresh Products
From parsley to locomotive - everything can be found at the green laiki market. If you are in Thessaloniki, we have prepared for you this brief guide through the markets with a schedule of when they are held in which part of the city.
For lovers of getting to know the “soul” of the city, these markets are a true feast for the eyes.
In Thessaloniki, the green markets do not have a permanent location, but are in a different part of the city every day. Side streets are quickly closed, stalls are set up, and the shopping can begin. From fish, olives, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, everything can be found there.
What are the prices like at the green markets in Thessaloniki?
Prices are significantly lower compared to prices on the islands (as we have compared with our colleagues).
Also, prices depend on which part of the city the market is in. So, with the same seller, one day the goods may be at one price and the next day in a neighboring district, at a slightly higher price. The seller explained to us that it depends on whether they are in a “more expensive” neighborhood or not. But in any case, the prices are very favorable.
There are also stalls that sell discounted goods from stores at very affordable prices starting from 3 euros (there are even items for 1 euro).

Tips for shopping at the markets in Thessaloniki
The markets usually operate from early morning until around 2 pm, so it’s best to come early to have the widest selection of fresh products.
If you want to buy fruits, vegetables, or olives at lower prices, wait until the end of the market - that’s when sellers lower prices to sell off their goods.
Most markets also have stalls with clothing, shoes, and household items, as we mentioned in the text above, often also stalls with sales.
If you enjoy visiting markets and experiencing the true spirit of Thessaloniki, we recommend asking when the laiki market is in the part of the city where you are staying and taking a walk. It’s worth it.
