Traveling to Greece outside the main season, in May, June, September, and October, is becoming an increasingly attractive option for tourists. We can say that the main summer season is extending more and now starts around June 20th instead of July, and ends around September 10th.

Vacationing in Thassos in May

Visiting Thassos in May offers a unique experience of the island. The air temperatures become pleasant, with average daily values of around 25°C, although in some years they can reach up to 30 degrees. Interestingly, it happens that the end of May is warmer than June itself.
However, it is important to note that the sea may still be colder for swimming, with temperatures ranging from 18-20 degrees. Nevertheless, this does not prevent early visitors from enjoying pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. Thassos in May is characterized by tranquility and the gentle sound of the sea, instead of the usual hustle and bustle.
Easter marks the beginning of the bathing season in Thassos and the tourist season as a whole. Most restaurants, cafes, and shops open their doors from May 1st.
If you are not passionate swimmers, May is the perfect month to visit the island. There are no crowds, the beaches are immaculately clean, the season is just starting, temperatures rise day by day, and the sun is not too strong, making beach stay very pleasant.
This is also the ideal time to get to know the locals, as the island is not yet flooded with tourists. Accommodation prices are more affordable, although the selection is smaller because not everyone is open in May.

Vacationing in Thassos in June

June brings true summer enjoyment in Thassos and, in our opinion, it is the best month for a vacation. The average air temperature is around 26 degrees, while the water temperature is around 23 degrees. In recent years, air temperatures in June sometimes exceed 30 degrees, especially in the second half of the month.
Nights are still cool, with temperatures dropping to around 17 degrees.
The beaches are very clean, there are no crowds, and it is warm enough to spend the whole day on the beach and in the sun. The colors of the sea in June are unreal, reflecting in various shades, as there is still no significant evaporation in the air that would blur the atmosphere.
In June, there is no overcrowding, but it is not empty either, and there are just enough people to give you the feeling that places are lively and that summer has begun. There is still enough parking space and enough room on the beach to feel comfortable and have your own space.
Accommodation prices are lower, as well as the prices of sunbeds and umbrellas. Many beach bars in June, at least until June 20th, do not charge for sunbeds, just ordering a drink is enough. In June, you won’t have to wait in line for gyros or to sit in a restaurant. June is the perfect month for a vacation.
However, June also carries the risk of occasional rainy and windy days, so that should be taken into account. In early June, the sea is not warm enough for those who are sensitive to cold.

Summer vacation in Thassos in September

September in Thassos bears many similarities to June. The average daily air temperatures hover around 27°C, while the nights can be cool, with temperatures dropping to 14 degrees. The period until September 10th is still considered high season, but after that, the crowds begin to diminish. The sea is warmer than in June, with an average water temperature of about 24 degrees. The wind can be stronger in September. Swimming in September is still very pleasant.
From September 1st, the school year begins, so there is no usual children’s chatter on the beaches that may bother some visitors.

Vacation in Thassos in October

October in Thassos offers an opportunity for relaxation and tranquility on the beaches. The average sea temperature is a pleasant 23°C, although the water temperature gradually decreases. The island retains its beauty, and visitors can enjoy beautiful sunsets, fishing, and relaxation without crowds. The sea is calmer than in September, although there is a possibility of very pleasant weather, especially in the first half of October. It is important to note that some restaurants and shops close at the end of September, and accommodations as well, so the choice may be limited, although accommodation prices are lower than in September.
October does not guarantee pleasant swimming in the sea and good weather, but it guarantees pleasant walks by the sea, enjoying the silence, exploring local attractions, and engaging in conversations with the locals. Additionally, the nights are cool, so it is advisable to bring warmer clothing and comfortable walking shoes.

Vacation on Thassos Off-Season - What to Expect?

In order to fully enjoy the charm of an off-season vacation on Thassos, it is important to be aware of a few facts. There is a higher likelihood that you won’t be able to indulge in daily swims, as rainy or cooler days can occur. Sea temperatures may be lower for bathing in May and October, so you should be prepared for that.
Also, don’t forget that some restaurants and shops will not be open off-season.

Keep in mind that evenings on Thassos during these months can be exceptionally cool, so it is advisable to bring warmer clothing, including light jackets, long-sleeved shirts, sneakers, and even pajamas.

It is important to note that climate change has led to an increased risk of fires, but the likelihood of these disasters is significantly lower during periods when temperatures are not extremely high.

Our advice is to choose destinations on the southern and western parts of the island for your off-season stay, where there are more sunny hours and less wind and waves. These areas include places like Potos, Astris, Limenaria, Pefkari, Tripiti, Skala Maries, Skala Kallirachi, Skala Sotiros, and others.

However, the advantages of off-season travel are numerous. You avoid crowds both on the roads and on the beaches, which allows for a truly relaxing vacation. Additionally, accommodation prices are more affordable. Many beach bars do not charge for sunbeds.

This is the perfect time for relaxation, exploring cultural attractions, and enjoying nature, without the need to avoid excessively hot tropical temperatures that characterize the summer months. Regardless of the month you choose, Thassos will provide you with an unforgettable vacation, combining beautiful beaches and natural wonders with diverse activities and experiences.
