Afitos - picturesque village with a rich history

Afitos is a picturesque village perched on a cliff above the Aegean Sea, known for its stone houses, narrow streets, and beautiful panoramic views. Afitos has been inhabited since ancient times, with the first remnants of settlements dating back to 3,000 years before our era. The town of Afitos dates back to the 7th - 8th century BC and contains remains of ancient sanctuaries dedicated to Dionysus and Zeus Ammon. This continuity in existence gives us the opportunity to walk not only through the town but also through the rich history of a place that has existed and endured for over 5,000 years.
Strolling through the village, you will encounter numerous stone houses from the 19th century that have been declared cultural heritage. Afitos is also home to several museums preserving archaeological and folklore artifacts.

Sanctuary of God Dionysus

The sanctuary of God Dionysus is located near Afitos, overlooking the sea. This sanctuary dates back to the ancient period and is believed to have been a place where rituals in honor of the god of wine, fertility, and joy, Dionysus, were held. The remains of the sanctuary are situated on a cliff rising above the sea, offering visitors a magnificent view of the Aegean Sea.

Temple of God Ammon Zeus

The ancient sanctuary of God Ammon Zeus from the 4th century BC is also a significant part of the historical heritage of Afitos. This temple dedicated to Ammon Zeus, a deity that combined elements of Zeus and the Egyptian god Amun, represents a key point in understanding the religious and cultural influence in the region. The temple remains further contribute to the significance of Afitos as a notable center in the ancient period.

How to reach the archaeological sites in Afitos?

These locations are relatively close to the center of Afitos and can be reached on foot. The walk from the village center takes about 10-15 minutes, but it is important to note that the terrain is partly rough due to stone paths and cliffs. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended. Nevertheless, the walk is pleasant, especially due to the beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

The sanctuaries are open-air sites with free access, but the remains are only partially preserved and there are not many inscriptions or informational signs, so visitors typically explore on their own.

The Church of St. Paul at the entrance to the village hosts an annual fair on June 28 in honor of the apostles Paul and Peter. Nearby there is a chapel in the rock, where, according to legend, the apostle Paul found refuge. The Byzantine tower is a recognizable sign of the village, located on the hill to the right of the port of Nea Fokea. This 28-meter high stone tower is the only one that survived to its peak. It is assumed that it was built in 1407 on the site of a prehistoric fort to protect the monastic metochion of the Saint Paul Monastery. The tower burned down in 1821, but the roof was rebuilt in 1976. Around the tower are the ruins of the eastern and southern wings of the metohion, as well as a small temple from 1868. In 1821, the tower served as the seat of Emmanuel Pappas, the leader of the Greek War of Independence in Halkidiki.
