In search of a hidden corner of Thassos, visit the village of Sotiras, one of the small hidden mountain villages of this beautiful island. Situated at an altitude of 300 meters, built amphitheatrically at the foot of Mount Ipsarion, Sotiras offers an unforgettable view of the Aegean Sea and provides a unique atmosphere that exudes tradition and history.

Like many villages in Greece, the villages were located in the mountains, away from the coast and the dangers that came from the coast (pirates), each having its own “Skala” (Skala Marijes, Skala Kalirahi…). In the “Skalas,” fishermen stayed while their homes and families lived in the villages above.

Where is the village of Sotiros located?

Sotiros is situated southwest of the main town of Limenas, at a distance of 22 km and only 3 km from the coastal area known as Skala Sotiros.
Location on the map

Formerly, Sotiros was home to miners and families from the surrounding village of Kalirahi, while today it has about 500 residents, 99% of whom are foreigners (Germans, Dutch, and English).

Square and Tradition

Sotiros has an irresistible charm due to its traditional houses and narrow cobblestone streets, through which the passage of cars is not possible, contributing to a sense of authenticity and peace.

In the center of the village, in the square, under the large plane trees, there is a marble fountain built back in 1890, so you can take a break right here and rest in the shade of the plane trees.

History and Connection to Mount Athos

For centuries, the village of Sotiras maintained close ties with Mount Athos. A significant part of this connection is reflected in the Temple of the Savior (Sotiros) built in 1890, whose iconostasis was handcrafted by monks from Mount Athos. The temple is an important historical and religious monument.

Natural Beauties and Unforgettable Views

One of the main attractions of this village is the spectacular view of the Aegean Sea that can be seen from almost every point. With clean air and a natural environment, staying in Sotiros feels like a true refreshment. For hiking enthusiasts, you can walk to the village of Kalirahi, which is about 4 km away. There are also trails to the mountain peak.

If you continue your journey through the mountains towards the village of Marijes and the waterfall, 5 km from Sotiros you can visit the monastery of St. Panteleimon in the village of Kazaviti. The road to Marijes from Sotiros is winding through the mountains and takes about an hour by car, but you will pass through the heart of Thassos.

If you enjoy exploring, in Sotiros and other mountain villages you will see authentic stone houses, significant churches and monasteries, and a spirit in which time seems to have stopped, far from the summer crowds and tourist atmosphere.
