These villages are often built in the mountains, far from the coast, to protect themselves from dangers like pirates. In their Skalas, such as Skala Marijes and Skala Kalirahi, fishermen used to spend time while their homes were in the villages above, creating a strong connection between the sea and the wooded hinterland.

Teologos

Teologos is the most famous traditional village located at an altitude of 220 meters, in the southeastern part of Tasos, about 50 kilometers from Limenas and 10 kilometers from Potos. It is known for its traditional Macedonian architecture and narrow cobblestone streets.

The village has a rich history with the first written traces dating back to 1287, and during the Turkish occupation (1455-1813) it was the island’s capital. The village is renowned for its cuisine, especially its meat dishes, so we warmly recommend you to try the famous lamb.

Panagia

Panagia is a picturesque mountain village located at an altitude of 300 meters, 4 km from Golden Beach and 8 kilometers from Limenas. The village and its surroundings are rich in water sources, with the most famous being the “fountain of love” located beneath the large cathedral church. The village is named after the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the inhabitants take pride in their religiousness and tradition, with 11 smaller churches in the vicinity. Panagia is also known for its good taverns, offering quality and tasty food, especially lamb.

Kazaviti

Kazaviti is hidden from view from the coast to avoid pirate raids. It is located 4 km from Prinos and 20 km from Limenas, known for its narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful traditional houses. The village is divided into Mikro and Megalo Kazaviti, which are 500 meters apart. The region is famous for organic meat, vineyards, and taverns offering authentic dishes. Don’t miss visiting the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, located nearby.

Kastro

Kastro is a medieval village, the oldest on Tasos, located 12 km northeast of Limenaria, at an altitude of 500 meters. It is known for the ruins of a castle from 1403, after which it was named (κάστρο - fortress), giving it a special charm. The village houses the Church of Saint Athanasius, built in 1804, with local residents participating in its construction using stone from the castle.

Kalirahi

Kalirahi is a small village on the western part of Tasos, overlooking the city of Kavala. It is located 24 km from Limenas and a few kilometers from Skala Kalirahi. Established in 1750 after the residents abandoned Kakirahi due to pirate attacks, the village features narrow stone streets and a central square with an ancient fountain. The ethnographic museum showcases traditional tools and handicrafts. As the village faces west, the sunsets here are beautiful.

Rahoni and Agios Georgios

Rahoni is a mountain village in the northwest part of Tasos, 15 kilometers from Limenas and 4 kilometers from the coast, from its Skala Rahoni. It is known for olive groves over 900 years old. In the village, you can buy olive oil, honey, and walnuts for which the village is famous.
Agios Georgios is an almost abandoned village, near Rahoni (1 km), but historically known for being the place where Mehmet Ali, founder of modern Egypt, spent part of his childhood in a Greek family. The village is home to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in the 19th century.

Maries

The village of Marijes is located at an altitude of about 200 meters and is approximately 13 km from Skala Marijes. The village residents are engaged in animal husbandry and beekeeping, so you can buy local honey here. The village is known for the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in just one day during the Ottoman rule. The monastery is located in an olive grove next to a spring known for its healing properties, attracting believers from all over the world. You can reach the village from Skala Marijes and Limenaria, and tourists often visit the nearby Genna Lake.

Potamia

Potamia is a village located on the eastern part of the island, 10 kilometers from Limenas. It has around 1,200 inhabitants involved in tourism, agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishing. The village is known for its traditional stone houses and beautiful nature at the foot of Mount Ipsarion. Here, you can combine enjoying the most beautiful beaches (Golden Beach) with hiking to the mountain top and savoring the magical view of the Aegean Sea.
